ANTIQUE AMERICAN SILVER FILIGREED/ENGRAVED SMALL SIZE SCENT NIPPER FLASK 1878-95 ANTIQUE AMERICAN SILVER FILIGREED/ENGRAVED SMALL SIZE SCENT NIPPER FLASK 1878-95 ANTIQUE AMERICAN SILVER FILIGREED & ENGRAVED SMALL SIZE SCENT / WHISKEY LIQUOR "NIPPER" FLASK ~ DESIRABLE BY WHITALL TATUM & CO. ~ Circa 1870’s – 1890’s Antique Perfume / Scent / Perfume / Nipper Flask is embossed in the bottom glass, "W T CO" for Whitall Tatum & Company in New Jersey. Whitall Tatum & Co., established in Millville, New Jersey, has a history that goes back to 1806. Although the factory originally made window glass, by 1820 it produced vials, pharmacy bottles, snuffs, and the like. Art Nouveau style with Sterling silver engraved overlay on the Glass Bottle and a Sterling Silver Screw Cap with cork. Although these small pocket / purse size flasks were widely sold as perfume bottles, they were also discreetly sold as small “nipper” flasks for whiskey, liquor, or other spirits. This small flask is shaped like a pocket whiskey bottle and could be kept inside a vest, jacket, or pants pocket of a well to do Gentleman, or as a "purse flask" for a lady of means to take an occasional "nip" of “medicinal” spirits. The glass body is hand blown into a mold. The inside glass is clear when held to the light. The outside glass is beautifully silver filigreed in a traditional scroll pattern with fine feather line hand engraving accents showing a little wear from use. The front side has a stylized silver line engraved center panel name that is uninscribed. Most flasks with this type of screw top dates to around 1890 to 1900 or so; this The back bottom of the base is marked Sterling (faint) and 783. This flask is embossed in the bottom glass, W & T Co above the letter B on the bottom. The embossed W & T CO above a letter mark was used between 1878 to 1895.The silver has no damage or repairs. The slightly domed Cap has a cork insert, is marked Sterling, and as expected with these thin hollow soft silver caps, there is a tiny ding on the top edge and a tiny dint on the top next to the edge. I have not tested the seal as putting liquid inside could leave water marks. In excellent condition overall. Measures about 2 3/4" tall x 1 1/2" wide. Weight is 1.1 ounces or 31 grams. This would be great for any Ladies, Gentleman's, Whiskey, liquor, gambling, Pre-Prohibition, bottle, or flask collection.
